Top Los Angeles Caisson Drilling Contractors
Our engineers at Alpha Structural are among the most experienced caisson drilling contractors in Los Angeles.
What Are Caissons?
Caissons, also known as piers or drilled shafts, are a type of foundation system where a deep hole is drilled into the ground, reinforced steel is placed in the hole, and new concrete is poured. The hole can be as much as 2 or 3 feet in diameter, and it can be drilled down as much as 60 feet in order to reach bedrock. In some cases, it may be acceptable to seat a caisson on thoroughly compacted dirt, but this is rarely the case in hillside scenarios.
Caissons are capable of supporting heavy, concentrated loads in a variety of applications. For this reason, they are commonly used for structural support in major engineering undertakings, such as bridges, highway overpasses and underpasses, high-rise apartment buildings and the like. Because of their proven strength and stability in such massive projects, caissons have also been found to be excellent for residential engineering applications, such as earthquake retrofitting a foundation, reinforcing stilt homes, or providing structural support for hillside retaining walls.
Caissons can be used in several different scenarios:
- Retaining walls
- Earthquake proofing and retrofitting
- Hillside home foundations
- Deep foundation supports
- Heavy, concentrated loads
The amount of planning and engineering required for installing caissons is not a small task, which means you want to choose a company you can trust. Alpha Structural has over 200 combined years of on-site experience to guide your project to completion.
